The Department of Neurology at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine was Founded in 1979 and is one of the first medical specialties established in the hospitals of Chinese Medicine. The Department is the key specialty of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the first key and high-level TCM discipline of National Administration of TCM, and the regional TCM (neurology) center of National Administration of TCM. The Department initiated the Neurology Society of China Association of Chinese Medicine and chaired for consecutive four terms. The Department also chairs 12 provincial specialized committees.
The Department of Neurology includes four sub-specialties: neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitation medicine, and psychiatry-sleep medicine. The Department consists of 20 clinical departments, 3 research teams, 1 key laboratory of Guangdong Province, 1 key research laboratory of National Administration of TCM, 10 studios of TCM famous doctors and schools, 7 specialized outpatient clinics, 3 neuro-interventional units, 1 hybrid operating room, and 9 nursing teams. There are a total of 349 beds (29 neuro-intensive care beds) and 400 medical workers (166 doctors) in the Department. Among them, 72 have senior titles, 55 have doctoral degrees, and 93 have master's degrees.
In 2005, Prof. Ling Feng and Prof. Li Tielin helped the Department establish the Cerebrovascular Disease Centre and proposed the concept of "Chinese and Western Medicine, Neurology and Neurosurgery, flying together". The Cerebrovascular Disease Centre includes 12 sub-specialties, including cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, neuroimmunity and infection, neuromuscular disease, neurocritical illness, brain tumor, epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology, dementia and cognitive disorders, neuro-rehabilitation, psychiatry-sleep medicine, and speech and swallowing disorders. These specialties are top-ranked regionwide and nationwide. The Department created the “Yin-Yang” syndrome differentiation system for stroke, proposed the prevention and treatment goal of “imbalance of qi and blood, stasis of phlegm and blood", and developed a management model of "whole disease chain" for stroke. Our development model of “integration of Chinese and Western medicine, internal and surgery medicine" (referred to as the Model of Neurology of Guangdong provincial hospital of Chinese Medicine) has been widely influential. The Department has been visited many times by heads of state and leaders of National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China and National Administration of TCM. In April 2022, the Department was awarded the “National Pioneer Worker” title by All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
